Paul Taylor : Still Taking Us Somewhere
Being introduced to Paul Taylor through “’Til We Meet Again,” there was something special there from the very beginning. It felt almost like an announcement: Paul Taylor was here, and he was here to stay. Thirty years later, that initial announcement has certainly proven true. He is still doing it, and the body of work between then and now has only continued to confirm what could be heard from the start. Paul Taylor is pure class, and after three decades of creating music unmistakably his own, he is certainly in a class of his own.
There are really two journeys here. There is Paul Taylor’s journey the creative life of an artist and all the places that life has taken him. Then there is the journey he has taken his listeners on over the years. The hits and the jams are countless. Any number of them could command their own conversation, each as deserving as “Ladies’ Choice,” the title track from his 2007 album. Infused within those tunes are memories moments in time carried by music that has somehow managed to remain both uplifting and sophisticated.
Perhaps that is the phrase that comes closest to describing it: sophisticated vibe. There is a level of sophistication in Paul Taylor’s music that truly places his sound in a category of its own. It is intentionally top shelf and seemingly always reaching higher. There is something encouraging about his style, something aspirational. The music does not simply make you feel good; somehow, it makes you want to rise to meet it. That is Paul Taylor music. There is nothing half done.
It is difficult to explain that kind of sophistication, and perhaps even harder to write about it without getting caught up in the memories that live behind the music. Try to describe a song and, before long, the music can take you somewhere else entirely a different place, a different time, perhaps even a different version of yourself. That is one of the beautiful things about music. It means something different to everyone.
Paul Taylor’s journey belongs to Paul Taylor, but the journey his music has taken listeners on belongs to each of them individually. They brought their own lives to those records—their celebrations, relationships, ambitions, late nights, long drives and individual chapters. Somewhere within all of that living, Paul Taylor’s music was playing. And somehow, through all those years, that sophisticated vibe kept showing up.
Through every era, every album and every thread running through the music, there is something unmistakably consistent: an attention to detail, a sophistication and a level of care that Paul Taylor delivers each and every time. Perhaps that is what makes thirty years feel less like a retrospective and more like evidence. Longevity can tell us how long an artist has been creating. The work tells us why people are still listening.
From On the Horn to It’s A Brand New Day, Paul Taylor has left a trail of clues along the way through the records, the hits, the jams and, perhaps most importantly, the memories. Together, they tell the story of a creative life that has continued moving forward while taking an audience along for the ride.
And just in case there was ever any doubt about what Paul Taylor was telling us all those years ago, thirty years of music have made the message increasingly difficult to miss.
Paul Taylor is top shelf and his music will continue to take us through the test of time.
