Willie Bradley Is Still Raising the Bar

The Grammy-nominated trumpeter joins The Paula Atherton Show for a conversation about music, longevity, purpose, and a career that continues to move forward.

There is a particular kind of confidence that comes from longevity. Willie Bradley is not simply remaining present, but he is continuing to evolve.

For contemporary jazz trumpeter Willie Bradley, the story is not confined to chart positions, major stages, celebrated collaborations, or industry recognition. Those accomplishments matter, and there are many of them. But during his recent conversation with Paula Atherton on The Paula Atherton Show, what emerges is the broader picture of an artist whose relationship with music has continued to expand across performance, education, mentorship, and the business of building a lasting career.

It is a fitting conversation between two accomplished musicians who understand the realities behind the music.

Bradley, a native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, is a graduate of South Carolina State University, where he earned degrees in Music Education and Music Performance. His career has since taken his music around the world, establishing him as a recognized voice in contemporary jazz.

His official biography reflects the scale of that journey: six successful contemporary jazz projects, three Grammy Award nominations, two No. 1 Billboard Smooth Jazz hits, and recognition as the 2021 Smooth Jazz Artist of the Year by Beats Magazine, as voted by The Smooth Jazz Network. Bradley is also a voting member of the Recording Academy.

Yet Willie’s résumé alone doesn’t explain him as an artist. That is where conversation matters.

Beyond the Stage

On The Paula Atherton Show, Bradley sits with Atherton not simply as a performer discussing a career, but as one working musician speaking with another. Bradley’s career has placed him alongside an extraordinary range of artists. He has also toured internationally in France, Portugal, and Japan as a member of the horn section for The Original James Brown Band.

His trumpet has also carried him beyond traditional concert stages. Bradley has performed the National Anthem for professional sports organizations including the Baltimore Orioles, Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, Carolina Hurricanes, and Los Angeles Clippers.

It is an expansive career, but perhaps one of its most meaningful chapters has brought him back to where part of the journey began.

Bradley now serves as a full-time Music Industry Professor and Artist-in-Residence at South Carolina State University. There, his experience becomes something that can be transferred to another generation. His work with students extends beyond classroom instruction. Bradley focuses on artist development, career readiness, and the practical realities of the music industry, while also creating opportunities for students to gain real-world performance experience. Through the Willie E. Bradley, Jr. Scholarship Foundation, he has also worked to provide financial support to Music Industry students.

That dimension of his career reveals something important: success does not have to end with the person who achieves it.

Bradley’s professional accomplishments have been recognized by his alma mater with the 2022 Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 2024, he received the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to the music industry and community service.

A Career Still Moving Forward

For all that has already been accomplished, Willie Bradley’s story remains decidedly present tense.

His music continues to reach listeners. His work continues in the classroom. His collaborations continue to expand. And the next chapter of his recording career is already taking shape.

New album coming soon: RAISING THE BAR. The forthcoming project brings Bradley together with an impressive group of contemporary jazz artists, featuring Peter White, James Lloyd, Ragan Whiteside, Nathan Mitchell, and Jacob Webb. The title feels appropriate. Raising the Bar is not simply a statement about what comes next. It reflects the trajectory of a career built through continued growth. Willie Bradley’s achievements have not eliminated the need to keep creating, learning, collaborating, and contributing.

That may be one of the clearest impressions left by Bradley’s conversation with Paula Atherton. The milestones are significant, but they are not the conclusion. For an artist who has performed with legends, earned industry recognition, reached the top of the charts, and returned to help prepare the next generation, there is still another record to make and another level to reach.
